What are Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Cancers?
Hepato-biliary-pancreatic cancers refer to malignancies arising in the liver, bile ducts (and gallbladder) and the pancreas. Together they affect a key block of the digestive and metabolic organ system where early signs are often subtle, and early diagnosis is critically important.

These cancers are often grouped because they share anatomical proximity, overlapping symptoms, diagnostic challenges and sometimes similar treatment pathways. The term emphasises that the liver (hepato-), biliary tree (biliary-) and pancreas (pancreatic-) each may be the origin of disease.

Sub-types of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Cancer
1. Liver Cancer (Primary)
Liver cancer most commonly starts in the main liver cells and is called Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC). It often develops in people who already have long-term liver damage such as cirrhosis from hepatitis B or C infection, alcohol-related liver disease, or fatty liver disease. The tricky part with liver cancer is that early symptoms may be vague or even absent, which means many cases are discovered only when the disease has already progressed.
2. Pancreatic Cancer
Pancreatic cancer usually begins in the ducts of the pancreas. It is known for being aggressive because early symptoms are minimal, making early detection difficult. Many patients are diagnosed at advanced stages when surgical removal may not be possible. However, treatment options like chemotherapy, targeted therapies and advanced surgical techniques can help control the disease and improve quality of life when started promptly.
3. Biliary Tract Cancer
Biliary cancers involve the bile ducts or gallbladder and are often called cholangiocarcinoma when they arise from the bile ducts. These cancers are relatively uncommon but tend to be diagnosed at later stages because symptoms such as jaundice or bile duct blockage usually appear once the disease has already grown. Early specialist evaluation is crucial when warning signs appear, especially in those with gallstones or chronic inflammation.

OncoVision Cancer Clinic - Diagnostic Procedures

Diagnostic Procedures

Blood Test Vials, Lab science
Blood tests & tumour markers
These include liver function tests for liver and biliary cancers, and specific markers like CA 19-9 in pancreatic or biliary cancers. They help detect abnormalities and guide further tests.
Modern MRI Scanning Equipment
Imaging studies
Ultrasound, CT scans and MRI are commonly used to identify tumours and assess their spread. Special scans like MRCP closely study the ducts for biliary and pancreatic cancer evaluation.
Endoscopy with Doctor and Endoscope
Endoscopic or interventional procedures
Techniques like Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) and ERCP are used for detailed internal assessment, relieving blockages and obtaining tissue samples when needed.
Lab Biopsy Histopathology Slide
Biopsy & Histopathology
A biopsy confirms cancer by examining tissue at the microscopic level. This helps determine the exact type and best treatment plan.
Multi-speciality team, board meeting, oncology
Multidisciplinary evaluation
Cancers may involve more than one organ system. Coordinated review by specialists in hepatology, oncology, and radiology ensures patients receive comprehensive care tailored to each case.
